Surgery for Thomas Vermaelen

It's emerged that defender Thomas Vermaelen will undergo surgery on an inflamed tendon sometime this week which will keep him out for at least six weeks. Thomas Vermaelen had been a rock at the back for us throughout the 09-10 Premier League and played 45 games in all competitions, having sustained this injury in August he's only managed 3 games this season. It was hoped he may make a return in January but with no improvement he will now undergo surgery to hopefully rid this injury that has kept him out for much of the season. It's a very good job Wenger brought in Koscielny and Squillaci in the summer or I fear we'd have been extremely short at the back for large parts of the season. However as Squillaci is now injured we only have Koscielny and Djourou fit which is a slight worry because if one of those gets injured we may be looking at playing Barcelona with a shuffled defence ... This may be the reason that many defenders have been linked with a move to the club in recent weeks, the following are all thought to have been looked at by the scouting staff: Matthew Upson Gary Cahill Christopher Samba Per Mertesacker Neven Subotic Sol Campbel Arsene Wenger always chooses to hold his cards close to his chest when it comes to signings and with two weeks left of the transfer window anything could develop yet. As this news that Vermaelen will definitely be out for an extended period has only just been certified Wenger can now act knowing that any signing will have a chance to get into the team and wouldn't be a waste of club finances at this very important stage in our season.
